Introduction

Hello! My name is Shanzeh and I am a junior at the University of Washington studying Operations / Supply Chain Management and Marketing. I thrive when I am keeping busy and staying involved in my community. I have a diverse array of interests and enjoy working with people from various backgrounds. Therefore, I have connected with a number of different communities. I am a resident adviser in the Boundless Leadership and Creativity living learning community, the senior events director for the Student Philanthropy Education Program, a personnel committee member for the Associated Students at the University of Washington, and a member of Delta Sigma Pi, a professional business fraternity.

These learning experiences have helped me reflect on the core values that drive my actions and decisions. Here is snapshot of my core values:

Philanthropy: Joining the Student Philanthropy Education Program has really helped me understand the importance of cultivating a "giving back" culture at the UW. I really believe that we all can make a difference in our community through our time, talent, and treasure.

Determination: I have been able to obtain my leadership positions and internship through perseverance. It did not all land in my lap but I know I had to work hard to be where I am today.

Friendliness: I have learned that I value relationships. I really enjoy meeting new people and my friendly attitude has allowed me to build great relationships with people I work with.

Teamwork: With all my leadership experience, teamwork has been essential in getting work done efficiently. I love working in teams where there is collaboration and cohesion.

Confidence: I have found that throughout my college experience my confidence has definitely increased. I can attribute this to my involvement in different organizations and positions.

Additionally, I have developed several leadership identities that encapsulate my experiences. I consider myself a peer supporter. Many of my learning experiences and activities have focused on helping others and providing support to my peers. These include the HPA program in Beijing where I helped international freshman transition into life at UW and being an RA where I provide resources to residents. I also identify as a philanthropy advocate. Being in the Student Philanthropy Education Program has brought me to being committed to instilling a giving back culture on campus. I actively educate students about the importance of philanthropy and take this responsibility to heart. My leadership roles have also involved working in a team. I really enjoy bringing together people’s strengths to have a larger impact. This can be seen in my RA role when planning programs that bring in other departments or communities. Additionally, as the events director for the Student Philanthropy Education Program, I am able to work together with the other officers to create marketing materials, reach out to vendors, and work with other campus organizations to produce a successful event.  Therefore, I am an avid collaborator.

I want to develop myself personally and professionally. It takes key experiences and diverse opportunities to make yourself grow as a person. I get myself involved because I want to meet new people, gain new perspectives, and get learning experiences outside the classroom. My goals as a leader focus on making my community a better place and having a positive impact on those around me. I see leadership as something that will continue to impact my life in new ways throughout my future career and in the new opportunities I take advantage of.
